Sir R. Macleay gave in, with some reluctance, and the
telegram of authority was duly communicated to the
Governor.
Sir C. Clementi has not yet reported the acceptance of the Canton Government's invitation or the appoint- ment of the Hong Kong delegation. It appears however from the attached cutting from the Times of 18 June that the Hong Kong Government has officially announced the appointment of delegates and it may be taken therefore that a letter accepting the invitation has been addressed to Mr. Brenan in the sense authorised.
